National Preparedness Month is a nationwide effort held each September to encourage Americans to take simple steps to prepare for emergencies in their homes, businesses and schools. National Preparedness Month 2006 is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. The goal of the month is to increase public awareness about the importance of preparing for emergencies and to encourage individuals to take action. “In the aftermath of Katrina everyone became aware of the need to be prepared to survive on our own after an emergency be it natural or manmade. But few of us can say that we have the emergency supplies or plan needed to do so. California’s citizens particularly need to be prepared. We have a number of potential threats including earthquakes, floods, mudslides, fires, and a variety of manmade emergencies to name a few”, said Muskie Jones, the company’s founder.

Families who are prepared can reduce the fear, inconvenience and losses that surround a disaster. What you do to prepare now can make a difference. Home Land Security and The Red Cross recommend that after most disasters, you and your family should be ready to be self-sufficient for at least three days; this may mean providing your own shelter, first aid, food, water and sanitation. Everyone should have emergency survival kits in their home, office, school and car. Local resources may be overwhelmed after a major disaster and emergency responders may not be able to reach you right away.
